This project aims to do several things: to create habitat for valuable pollinators, to provide food and water to overwintering Monarch butterflies, to educate the community about Monarch Butterflies, and to create a space for the community to learn from and enjoy.
In a nutshell, we will be planting California native, nectar-rich plants along the fence and tree lines to create habitat and food sources for the pollinators and a park-like, natural setting for people. The project will be completed in phases to make the workload and funding more manageable. See below for drawings and areas of need.
If you feel you have knowledge or skills we can use, want to donate money to the project, or just want to help out please, let us know!
First, we must prepare the site for planting. We will be removing trash and debris on the first Saturdays of each month until October. In doing so we will be preparing for the planting dates in October. Smooth the site, and apply mulch to enrich the soil with necessary nutrients to support plant life, retain moisture, and prevent weeds. The projected completion date is September 2018.
As mentioned above, we will be tackling the cemetery transformation in phases to make the project more manageable. The first phase will focus on the East fence line starting at the edge closest to Etting road and working our way along the fence towards the middle. We envision a small sheltered seating area for small group learning activities by neighboring schools, lots of flowering plants and shrubs for Monarchs and native pollinators and a serene, peaceful space for residents. Projected completion date is November 1, 2018
